Am I Ready for This???

It’s getting close to pandemonium around here. {if you didn’t read my previous post, we have 2 girls that are a year and a week apart (current ages: 27 months & 15 months) and we’re 33 weeks pregnant with our lil’ man} I had a pre-natal check-up this week and my midwife wanted to do a sonogram to see how lil’ man was measuring. We had some surprising news – lil’ man is already measuring at 6 lbs 5 oz. This makes me nervous because our oldest daughter came 1.5 weeks early and was 7 lbs 8 oz, our second daughter was 2.5 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. So in a week’s time, he will weigh more than when his sister was born. If he stays the whole 40 weeks, he could weigh 9 lbs! And I don’t do epidurals!! Ahh!!

On the other side of that, he could decide to come early… Am I really ready to have 3 kids in the house to take care of? Going to the doctor with 2 kids is enough of a challenge already! Due to my lack of planning and timing of my doctor’s appointment, I was unable to get someone to watch the girls for me when I went in this week for the sono and pre-natal appt. My oldest, the 2 yr old, doesn’t like when anyone takes my blood pressure, or when I have to lay down & expose the belly to listen to lil’ man’s heartbeat, so I knew the sono would be interesting. Sure enough, she started throwing a fit inside the double stroller and lil’ sis started getting upset too. The lady performing the sono was wonderful, she even went and got the girls fruit snacks – which pacified the oldest {which made the younger one quieter, but not completely satisfied}. So, it started out as a Momtastrophe, but didn’t end up too bad in the end. So, the good stuff from our visit:

our-lil-man-thumbsuckingOnce my oldest calmed down, she called her lil’ brother on the imaging screen a “puppy”. We got her to call him “baby” a few times, but it always reverted to “puppy”. My oldest daughter has very full lips {she looks a little like Shiloh Jolie-Pitt} and the sono technician said that it looks like our lil’ man is going to have full lips as well. I asked my 2 yr old if her brother was going to look like her and she stated, very matter-of-factly, “Yes”.

We also found out that lil’ man is already a bona fide thumb sucker. We could get him to move around with the cow bell {yes, they ring a cow bell to try and get baby to move}, but he would not take that thumb out of his mouth! {oldest sucked her thumb instead of a paci for a few months, but second child wouldn’t take thumb or paci} We got a picture of him sucking that thumb, hopefully you can make it out — it’s in there pretty good!

our-lil-man-eyeopenThe sono technician was finally able to measure his stomach because he was taking in fluid while sucking his thumb. She had to measure it quite a few times, because she was getting a very big reading, then she turned to me and said, “No, it’s right, sweetie, you’re baby has a buddha belly. But that’s okay because that squishes when he comes out, the head doesn’t and he has a small head – so it’ll work.” She then showed me where he was measuring at, percentile-wise. His head is about 37%, his arms and legs 75% and his belly… a whopping 98%! And no, I’m not gestational!

Lil’ man opened an eye for us and we got a cool picture of that too! Then, we met with my midwife and there were no fits this time when she took my blood pressure and we listened to the heartbeat! Woo-hoo! Making progress! Then, we drove the 40 minute drive home, with the windows down on the interstate, on an 80 degree day {because the air in the car isn’t working} and the girls arrived home exhausted and ready for naps! Meanwhile, I kept thinking about how big lil’ man is measuring and wondering — am I going to be ready for this?
